The class did a great job publishing different aspects of their story using Microsoft Word. Great job!!! Thanks to all the parents who were able to come listen to the story share today. Ford Elementary is so blessed with such awesome students and very supportive parents. Thanks to all the parents who helped make the Fairy Tale Tea a fun affair for the kids! FRIDAY'S Class
It's Extinct!
Students became archaeologists when they came upon an outcrop of rock and soil. They discovered several remains and artifacts in the soil. The archaeologist had to put the bones back together of an ancient, extinct animal. The group of archaeologists presented their animal and some background information for each animal discovered. Here are a few pictures of the remains...

EQ: What is stratigraphy and why is it important?
Recently, the archaeology students learned more about how scientists figure out the "age" of something (artifacts, bones, fossils, etc.) . One way is stratigraphy. The students participated in the process of erosion and learned what the statement "Deeper is Older"meant. (Thanks to parents for supplying all the materials!!!)
Here are a few photos of the "event":

:::January 2010 Project:::
PURPOSE: The ‘Topic of Interest’ (TOI) or ‘Area of Expertise’ (AOE) project is a time for students to explore something they would like to learn more about. While students are researching, they will work on and improve skills such as selecting a topic that is ‘just right’ (not too broad/ not too simple), searching for appropriate resources – books, online, articles, reference sources, how to take notes, how to paraphrase/summarize, how to record sources, and how to present a topic in a creative and informative way. Also – it is a fun way for students to learn more about each other. Ask your child about the checklist and rubric for this assignment. The due date has been posted on the class calendar.

THIRD GRADERS:
Make sure to use your agenda and your project checklist to keep up with your tasks. Remember that you are writing a creative report (part informational writing/ part science fiction) to explain and describe the deep space object you have discovered.
Your first task is due 05.05.09 - Written Report.
Refer to your project checklist to make sure you include all the elements of your creative report. In class, students have had the opportunity to research their topic using books, encyclopedias, and the internet. Students then organized their information by creating a web. (see example below) Currently students should be working on their rough drafts by using their web and research pages. Students should have their rough draft completed by 4/23/09 so that Mrs. K can give feedback to each student.
Sample Brainstorming Web:
The second task is the Creative Presentation that is due 05.14.09.
Students should refer back to the STAR POWER orange paper to explain this task. Currently students should be brainstorming on what format they will used to communicate what they have discovered. Also students should be brainstorming what props and materials they will need during the presentation.
