Kell Robotics, Cobb EMC to Hold LEGO® Building Competition for Fifth, Sixth Graders

The Kell High School Robotics Team and Cobb EMC are teaming up to hold
the Kell Robotics LEGO® Building Competition on Friday, May 20 at 6:30 p.m.
Fifth and sixth grade students are welcome to register for the event,
which is limited to 100 participants and will take place in the school’s
cafeteria. There is a $40 registration fee.

Each student will receive a basic LEGO® set at the beginning of the competition.
The first three students to accurately complete it will compete in a final round
to win the LEGO® STAR WARS Death Star set, which is valued at $400. The fourth,
fifth and sixth place students will compete for the Clone Turbo Tank. All LEGO®
sets used by students during the course of the competition will belong to them
at the conclusion of the event and other LEGO prizes will be awarded as well.

Cobb EMC has supported the Kell Robotics Team since 2006 as part of an effort
to encourage student interest in science. Proceeds from the LEGO® event will
benefit the Kell Robotics Team and Cobb EMC’s Washington Youth Tour, an annual
competition in which students compete for a weeklong educational and
leadership experience in Washington, D.C.

For registration information, visit www.kellrobotics.org.

Tri-Cross Contest for Students!

Tri-Cross is introducing another way to get students involved with thinking through strategy using board games!

PRIZES for each week:

First Prize:           1 student will win a $15 gift card and Tri-Cross Kid T-Shirt.

Runners Up:       2 students will be given Tri-Cross t-shirts for having the second and third best answers for the week

Each Sunday of the week we will be posting a question on our website encouraging the students to think about how they would use strategy through board games.

  • We will do this starting this Sunday 2/5/11 and continuing until 5/24/11.
  • Students can either answer during class time or they can answer at home.  Only one answer per week, per student.
  • On our website we have a page where the students can go to fill out the 100 words or less response. (www.gamesforcompetitors.com)
  • There is a huge link on the front called “Tri-Cross Weekly Educational Awards” where they can click to access the page.
  • We only ask for their name, grade level, teacher, school, and city (encourage them to just use an initial for the last name, not the full name)
  • This is only open to 3rd through 5th grade. The students will have until Thursday afternoon at 5 PM EST to answer the questions.
  • The teacher of the student will then be notified and we will email him/her directly to let them know the student won.
  • The student’s response will be posted on our website each week as the best answer.

Academic Adventures @ UGA

Enriching the Lives of Gifted Students

UGA-Duke TIP Academic Adventures provide opportunities for academically talented 5th and 6th grade students to take enriching and challenging courses. The program introduces topics that are generally not available in students' local schools. The experience provides enrichment, sharpens skills, and provides an opportunity for students to interact with similarly motivated peers. Academic Adventures is open to all 5th and 6th grade students who have participated in Duke TIP's 4th/5th Grade Talent Search.
