Georgia Ranks 7th in the Nation in New Education Report

State School Superintendent, Dr. John Barge, submitted the following new education report to Education Week. The annual “Quality Counts" report is an investigation of key education outcomes that provides ranks and grades for each state based on their commitment to improve educational policies and practices.

Iowa Test of Basic Skills

Students in third grade will take the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills on October 10th - 14th. The ITBS is a nationally normed test that measures student achievement in reading, language arts, mathematics, science and social studies. This standardized test is multiple-choice and will provide both the school and parents with important information about the specific strengths and weaknesses of students in the content areas tested. As always, test scores are only one measure of what and how well students are learning. Please stress to your student the importance of the test and doing his or her best. However, be careful not to create undue anxiety in the student. Students perform best when they are relaxed. You will be notified when test results are received later in the year.

Field Trip

Last Friday, our cIass took a trip out to the Vulcan Rock Quarry in Kennesaw, GA. Third graders were given a tour that consists of a slide presentation about all of the vehicles that are used at the site. Then, we were shown a film of the drilling, blasting, collection, crushing and distribution processes. Finally, we boarded the school bus for a quick trip to the edge of the quarry, for a quick peek inside. We were allowed to dig through some of the rocks and take home whatever interested us (up to 5lbs.). We were surprised to learn that Vulcan is also the largest quarrying company in the United States!
